WHAT MADE YOU INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN RECRUITING?
I have always been a people person. I enjoy meeting new people and have a natural curiosity about most everything, but particularly about people... so I became an Accountant. Eventually, I realized that I wanted to engage in a more meaningful way with people. As a Recruiter, I can leverage my background while also connecting with people. I really enjoy advising, guiding, and coaching to help both people and companies grow.
WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM OTHER RECRUITERS?
I really care about the people with whom I work. I listen to what they want, guide them to make sure that expectations are reasonable, and ultimately, help them find that right job or candidate. I believe in the long-term value of a relationship. I am always willing to lend an ear or advice no matter the personal outcome. I am very direct in my approach even if it is not what the person wants to hear as it is what they need to hear.
WHAT IS ONE THING THAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Most people meet me and assume I am from the East Coast, but I actually grew up in Tennessee. The giveaway is my over usage of “y’all” and my friendliness towards strangers (much to my husband’s dismay).
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
I wish I had more spare time. I have three young kids and try to spend as much time with them as I can. I am a joiner. You will always find me volunteering to help at school or in my neighborhood, spending time with friends, exercising, or drinking wine (see kids above) … and generally overcommitting but loving every minute of it.

What made you interested in a career in recruiting?
I always wanted to be in a profession that was service orientated and in a position that has a lot of interaction with people. Recruiting is a perfect match because it leverages my degree in accounting and my audit experience at Deloitte while providing the opportunity to help my clients achieve their career/hiring goals on a daily basis.
What do you love about your job?
So many things…helping a job seeker with their resume or interview preparation, counseling a hiring manager on a hiring decision, providing market insight to my clients, and most of all working with the team here at BVOH whose embraces our core values: HUSTLE, HIGH ROAD, PASSION, and TEAM ONE!
What are your personal values that help you in your job?
Love what you do and work hard at it. And always be genuine, polite and professional.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Watching my daughters’ sporting events, jogging in the open space, and cruising around Walnut Creek on my Vespa.
What is your dream vacation?
I’ve always wanted to charter a sailboat in the Caribbean. But my annual summer vacation to Priest Lake, Idaho is always spectacular!

Why do you work at BVOH?
When we started BVOH in 2004, we had the vision of creating a recruiting firm that was focused on quality and the building of long term relationships. While so much has changed for us since 2004 I love that our initial vision still holds true.
How do you approach building a relationship with a client or candidate?
Every meeting that I have is for the purpose of building a foundation for a long term relationship. Sure it would be great if I found an amazing Controller for a client in 1 month, or a candidate their dream job in 3 weeks, but what is much more impactful is when I become a lifelong career advisor for a finance professional and when I become a long term partner for a company’s finance organization.
What do you think is the most valuable thing you can do for your candidate or client?
The most valuable thing I can do for one of my candidates is to listen to their story, help them create a long term career plan based on their natural gifts, and then help them execute on that plan. The best thing I can do for my clients is to help them hire the Bay Area’s most talented finance professionals.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
There is nothing I love more than spending time with my husband and two young children.

What do you love about your job?
Making the “feel-good” placements. Those placements that really allow a candidate to achieve something they are working toward or allow a hiring manager to build their team with the best person possible. When both sides feel great about the match, I feel great about my role in helping to make it happen.
How do you approach building a relationship with a client or candidate?
When I meet a candidate or client, my goal is to really understand what they need. I ask a lot of questions and spend most of my time listening. My goal is to have as much open and transparent dialogue as possible with both sides so I can gain a better understanding of what is going to be the right fit.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spare time? What exactly is that?
What are your passions outside of work?
Raising two crazy, hilarious and amazing boys.

What made you interested in a career in recruiting?
When I was in the Big 4, I realized that the things I loved most about my job were on campus recruiting, getting to know my clients and coworkers and corporate volunteering. It took me a few years to realize that and once I did I met with a recruiter and realized – this is the perfect job for me!
How do you approach building a relationship with a client or candidate?
I like to get to know the person on a professional level and also learn about them on a personal level as well. Finding common ground with clients and candidates is a great way to build a rapport and trust with someone that you are going to work closely with on a very important decision, whether it’s the next step in their career or hiring the next member of their team.

Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, New Order – they were all so great I just can’t name one!
Who is the celebrity you want to hang out with?
Jimmy Fallon.

How do you approach building a relationship with a client or candidate?
I think the best way to earn trust and credibility from clients and candidates is by putting yourself in their shoes. That requires listening and asking questions to really understand their challenges and motivations. Being a great consultant or recruiter means that you’re challenging expectations and delivering on promises. Connecting on a personal level is also critical – people do business with people they like.
What are your personal values that help you in your job?
Keeping a positive outlook helps me be open-minded about every obstacle I encounter. Disappointments or challenges can be emotionally draining and focusing on the solution instead of the problem is critical to resolving or repairing issues quickly. Communicating directly and honesty are also important values to me and go a long way in earning trust and credibility in building new relationships.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I love to spend time with my husband and two boys, ages 3 and 5. We are all about long urban hikes in San Francisco, going on bike rides, and exploring all of the lesser known corners of Golden Gate Park. I also love to recharge with my girlfriends sans kids – there is nothing like spending time with friends that you’ve known for 20+ years.

When we’re not out and about exploring, I watch way too much HGTV and Real Housewives of Whatever. It’s relaxing and great background noise. Another guilty pleasure is buttery, delicious triple cream cheese. I’m always looking for the next best thing, but Brillat Savarin is hard to beat.

I most value being authentic, having open communication and behaving with high ethical standards. Given these traits, I am able to personally connect with candidates and clients, build trust, and develop long-term relationships.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a teacher and so I am not surprised I became a recruiter. Like a teacher taking a student under their wing, there are many similarities in working with candidates: guiding their careers, giving interview preparation advice, making suggestions for their resume and professional correspondence.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I have managed to eliminate most sugar from my diet, but I cannot resist a toasted marshmallow.

Why do you work at BVOH?
When I decided to change careers, I was looking for a company where the culture and values of the individuals were front and center — a place where people loved what they did, and worked hard for what they believed in. I’m motivated and inspired by my colleagues at BVOH, and in turn, do my best to motivate and inspire others.
What do you think is the most valuable thing you can do for your client?
Be honest, direct, and accountable. I’m not one to over promise and under deliver, and I’d rather have the tough conversations proactively rather than reactively. That being said, I strive to give my best self to my work and take pride in my ability to build and maintain meaningful relationships with others.
What is your dream vacation?
I’m hoping to go to Ireland and Scotland in the next few years - I’d love to see the countryside, learn more about the culture, and get in many, many rounds of golf. Other than that, I’ve had a goal to step foot on every continent. I still haven’t been to South America or Antarctica, and it may take a lifetime to convince Natalie, my partner, to go anywhere near the latter.
What is your favorite quote?
I love to read, so it’s hard to pick just one. Here are two that come to mind:
“If I'd learned one thing from traveling, it was that the way to get things done was to go ahead and do them. Don't talk about going to Borneo. Book a ticket, get a visa, pack a bag, and it just happens.” - Alex Garland
And
“It’s never too late to have a happy childhood.” - Tom Robbins

Listening is one of the most valuable attributes that I provide to my clients and candidates. Looking for a new position can be a stressful process, and I always try to alleviate that by getting a deep understanding of their needs.

Food and travel. In college, I had the privilege of studying food and wine in Italy, and this led to a newfound passion. I have since traveled throughout Eastern and Western Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia. I enjoy learning about the history and cultures of each place I go to and never shy away from an exciting meal. Traveling is a humbling experience, and I will continue to seek new ways to enrich my travels abroad.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Reality TV is my guilty pleasure. As embarrassing as it is, I can’t see a day in my near future where I turn off the Real Housewives. I’ve always loved a good laugh, and the pure ridiculousness of these ladies provides endless entertainment.

Why do you do what you do?
I’ve always been outgoing and social, so transitioning from being an auditor to a recruiter was very easy. As opposed to sitting behind a computer all day, I get to speak and build relationships with professionals at all levels and ultimately be part of their career advancement and growth.
What is the most valuable thing you can do for your coworker?
The most valuable thing I can provide for my coworkers is collaboration. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and it’s crucial that we work together to execute the task at hand. The biggest motivator for me is when a candidate or a client has a positive experience working with BVOH.
How do you approach your job – what do you value, how do you think?
I approach every relationship I have with my candidates by being their best advocate. Ultimately, this is their job search. I’m here to be their partner and support them along the way. Not only am I a source of employment, but career advice as well. I love helping my candidates gain confidence throughout the interview process by highlighting their strengths and improving their weaknesses. Confidence is key.
Interests outside of work & what makes you tick?
My biggest passion outside of work is definitely golf. I used to teach lessons in college and find the golf swing so incredibly unique. There are so many moving parts and a million ways to hit a ball. I have been playing for about 14 years and try and get on the course about twice per week. I’ve also been doing stand up comedy for about eight years. It’s probably the most nerve-racking thing I’ve ever done, but the feeling of having a good set is impossible to beat.
“There are no excuses” – Paul Lipkin (my dad). This has been my family motto for my entire life. I interpret this quote to mean keeping your word, respecting those around you, and holding yourself accountable for anything that happens in life, regardless of the outcome. I know it’s cheesy, but I love parmesan.

Being able to create long-term professional and personal relationships. A big part of recruiting is helping a client fill an open requisition and a candidate find their dream job but it doesn't end there. Being there to provide career guidance, market intel, interview preparation assistance to resume writing assistance are also important resources a recruiter should be able to provide. Being someone a client or candidate can rely on is the most valuable thing you can do as a recruiter.

These decisions can positively impact our clients, consultants, colleagues, and teammates. We get to make a difference every day.

Authenticity can be illustrated in various ways, from being open to learning from mistakes, accepting others, and walking into situations with a positive intent.

I’m a huge reader. I read over 100 books a year, and the only genre I don’t like is romance. I’ve read so many crime and detective books that I should be a certified detective when I retire from recruiting. I’m also an amateur “chef” and love to cook for my family.

With BVOH, there is no compromise— you get the best of both worlds! I’m very proud to be a part of the team.
WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL VALUES THAT HELP YOU IN YOUR JOB?
I grew up in Kansas, and where I come from, there’s a friendly/neighborly kindness and authenticity. ‘Keeping it real’ is the gold standard. Now I also love coaching and inspiring our team members to do the same, to approach their job with passion and be driven by a singular goal, which is to add value for their relationships well beyond that of a vendor. I love recruiting for our internal team and showing people who have been turned off by other firms that not all firms are the same. That they can be successful and yet still be driven to perform very high-quality work and delight their clients, while not compromising service, or worse, ethics, to close the deal.
